It’s Great, It’s Terrific, It’s the Best Show on Earth
(Day #22: 30-Day Blog Challenge)
I doubt that anyone really gets my reference in the title but if you’re a big Monkees fan (more specifically a Micky Dolenz fan) you might be able to get it. Micky starred in a televison show called Circus Boy from 1956-1958 and the title is part of the theme song. However, this post isn’t about Micky Dolenz or the Monkees. But, if you missed my post about them just click HERE! Today’s post is all about the Shrine Circus that we went to in 2012.
It had been a really long time since I had attended a circus and I couldn’t wait to take Shawn because I knew that he would enjoy the animals and all of the stunts that they do. Michael on the other hand doesn’t do well with crowds but he still managed to have a good time. The Shrine Circus comes to the Erie County Fair Grounds and Event Center each March.
We got really good seats when we went in 2012 (in 2013 we had less than stellar seats but you can’t win all the time). It took Shawn awhile to really understand that was going on but after awhile he got into it. He was so worried about the acrobats and what would happen if they fell. After we explained that they had a net, all was good and he relaxed.
They had a lot of really neat stunts and it was really cool to watch these men, women and children do these amazing and death-defying feats.
The elephants of course are my favorite part of the show (next to the clowns) and it amazes me with the stuff that they can do. Elephants are one of my favorite animals and as a child, I remember going to a circus and being able to ride on one! It’s so cool but it was a lumpy ride and they smelled like, well… elephants! 😉
I unlike some people I know, don’t mind the clowns at all. I think they are great and silly and could watch them all day. Their silly antics make them so lovable. Now I know not everyone agrees with me but to each their own. I do wish that the Shrine Circus did more with the clowns but what they do have is great.
Of course there is nothing like the tigers and them jumping through the hoops of fire. As awesome as it is, I always get a bit nervous that something could happen to one of them. I know they’re trained but it still worries me a bit.
We didn’t attend the circus this year because we were dealing with a lot of sickness in the house at this time. I saw a poster yesterday though for a free circus that is coming to town. I am certain that it won’t be anything near as big as the Shrine Circus but we might check it out. I know we’ve got a lot planned and going on (which is nothing new. We’ll be busy until January…), so we will have to play it by ear.
