Hey, Hey We Love the Monkees!
(Day #1: 30-Day Blog Challenge)
When I was in high school, my girl friends and I were known as the “Monkee Girls” because we lived, breathed and obsessed over the 60’s group The Monkees. We each had watched them as kids and liked their music but it wasn’t until TV Land started playing them on a regular basis during our teenage years that we started to really get into them. Now when I say obsessed, I really mean that. We joined fan clubs (believe it or not, Mike Nesmith had a fan club in the late 90’s!), watched and recorded all episodes, bought all of their albums and learned as much as we could about these 4 guys.
Our senior year came and I had learned of a Monkees concert (sans Mike Nesmith because he wasn’t touring at the time) and unfortunately, my parents didn’t allow me to go but my 2 friends got to attend. I was certain that I had missed my chance to ever see them and it took me a long time to forgive my parents for it. A few years later and after I had began dating Michael (not Nesmith, obviously. 😉 )The Monkees once again came to Buffalo and Michael took me to see them! They were playing a show after our Minor League Baseball Team, The Bisons and I think I almost burst into tears as I was sitting there. I couldn’t believe that I was seeing them in person.
As an adult and all of these many years later, I can say that I still love them just as much, if not more than I did when I was a teen. I have the boxed set of their tv show, all of their albums (some actual vinyl ones), posters, t-shirts, trading cards, etc. I don’t think a week goes by that I don’t listen to their music and I even have my very own “wool hat” too! Mike Nesmith has always been my favorite Monkee and just to prove that he’s my favorite, I had Shawn on his birthday (it was Davy’s birthday too!). LOL Of course it was a coincidence that it happened that way but how awesome is that!?!
Back in the fall of 2012, the Monkees announced that they were touring again (this time with Mike but unfortunately without Davy since he had passed away earlier that year). I was lucky to have my 2 best Monkee friends come home from Boston and West Virginia for the concert. It was absolutely amazing and we had a fabulous time! It was almost as though we were transported back to our teenage years and even though we felt like the youngest people there, we didn’t care what people thought of us. (Michael was dragged to the concert because when I bought my tickets, I didn’t know they were coming.)
Here we are after the concert with our t-shirts and other memorabilia. L>R Sarah, Erica and Me. 🙂
Some neat facts about the concert: the drum set is the actual one that was on the set of the show. Micky Dolenz is singing Randy Scouse Git here and he’s wearing the same poncho that he wore in the show. They did a great tribute to Davy and we all got to sing along to Daydream Believer in honor of him. It would have been great to see all 4 of them play together but I am happy that I at least got to see Mike play with the band.
I leave you with just a few more photos from the concert. 🙂
