A Look Back: College Weekends, Part 2
This is the 2nd post for my Chatterbug College Homework Assignment. You can read about Cazenovia College HERE!
The summer between my 1st and 2nd year of college (2000) is when I met Michael. We had started working at the same place and spent the entire summer together. When it was time for me head back to college that fall, we were uncertain how our relationship was going to work. Michael came with my family as we packed up all of my belongings and made the 3 1/2 hour drive back to Cazenovia College.
During the year that I was there, Michael made the 3 1/2 hour drive every other weekend to see me. He was working a 2nd shift job, so when he got out of work at 11pm, he would head out and call me when he got there and I would let him in the building. He would stay until Monday morning when I would go off to class and he would make the drive home. This time in our relationship is some of my most cherished memories of my life.
Since undergrads weren’t allowed to have a car on campus, it was nice to get out and explore the area when Michael came to visit. We would head into Syracuse, NY or just explore the countryside. This was pre-GPS, so we would just start driving and see where we ended up. We always managed to find our way back though. 🙂
There is a little town called Manilus that you drive through to get to Caz and they have a great duck pond. We would stop there every weekend and buy a loaf of bread to feed to the ducks. There was a lot more than just the duck pond, so we would walk around, talk and get to know each other. This was the 1st year of our relationship and it really strengthened our bond with each other. (We’ve been together for 14 years now!)
In 2012, we decided that we wanted to go back for a visit (it had been quite a few years since we had been there) and of course, we took Shawn to see the duck pond. It was fall so the leaves were gorgeous and it was just magical to share “our spot” with Shawn. It really does have a lot of meaning to us and I couldn’t help but get a little teary-eyed walking around. It had been a long time since I had returned to Caz but we hadn’t been to the duck pond in Manlius since I transferred colleges after my 2nd year there.
It was a very chilly and windy day when we went but we made the best of it. I really do wish that we lived closer so we could visit more frequently and spend as much time we want. If there was any place that I would like to move to, it would be in the Cazenovia/Manlius NY area. Maybe someday because who knows what could happen in the future.
The ducks are super friendly (because people are always giving them food, I’m sure. lol) and they have a couple swans in the pond too.
Shawn had a really fun time running around with food for the ducks (just like Michael and I would do during our visits), playing in the leaves and spending time in a different area. On Monday morning as I was sitting in class, my fellow classmates would tell me that they saw Michael and I again at the pond as they were heading back to the campus. I would smile because they all thought it was the sweetest thing ever. To us, we had no idea that these weekends were shaping our future. We just were having fun and getting to know each other better.
During this trip we also headed into Cazenovia but it was starting to rain by then, so we didn’t get really walk around the campus but that’s ok. That will be for another trip back. We did however head down to Cazenovia Lake (another spot that we spent a lot of time at).
My Chatterbug College Homework Assignment is a 3 part series and my next post is all about my college trip to Washington, DC in 2001.
