We have been to Mystic, Connecticut twice before to visit Michael’s Aunt and his cousin’s family. It’s where the famous movie, Mystic Pizza is based on (btw, the pizza is great there! Just in case you were wondering.) and they have a wonderful Seaport. Michael’s Aunt Jan passed away earlier in the week, so early Saturday morning we packed up our vehicle and set off for the 8 hour drive. Michael may not have seen his Aunt much but he was close to her, so we had to go. Not that I am complaining because family is family and I am also always up for a road trip.
We had some time to ourselves while there, so we decided to head down to Mystic Seaport and walk around. We didn’t have time to see all of it but what we did see was awesome. All of the boats and old buildings made me think of the Disney movie, Pete’s Dragon. (one of my very favorites!)
We watched a short skit preformed by people dressed up as pirates. They told a very funny tale about pirates and whaling in the 1800’s. It was amusing and I actually learned a thing or two. They had an amazing children’s center with games, puzzles, and other activities for them to play with. Shawn would have stayed there the entire time if we had let him.
They also had an area where the kids could build their own ship. Shawn picked out the pieces and Michael glued them on. It turned out pretty cool and it even has a plank. Shawn was excited to find a piece of wood with the notch in it. Love his creativity! (Don’t know where he gets it from. 😉 )
We got to tour a real 1800’s ship and here is Shawn giving me his best pirate “Arrr….” I told him that he was pretty convincing and should become a pirate. We play pirates at home often, so I guess he has a lot of practice.
We stayed 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Express right in downtown Mystic. It was Shawn’s first time in a hotel and he was so stinking cute! He had to unpack his toys, books, and games and line them all up on the shelves and was amazed by everything in the room. The hotel had this awesome fountain out front, so of course we had to get a photo of it. We also got to swim in the hotel pool, which was awesome. We don’t go swimming much but we’re thinking of getting a YMCA membership so Shawn can get swim lessons.
For being a trip that included a funeral, it was a really nice mini vacation this summer. My sister Jess lives a few hours from there in Catskill, NY, so we stopped by on our way home to see her for a few hours. It had been awhile since I saw her last in May, so it was good to give her a hug and catch up with everything.
