Christmas Tradition: Looking at Christmas Lights
Day 22 of 25 Days of Christmas
On December 21st for the past 11 years we have loaded up our vehicle with snacks, hot cocoa and Christmas music for our annual event of driving around looking at all the wonderfully decorated houses. It’s something that we just love to do and we’ve gotten lucky every year that the weather hasn’t been terrible. It’s simple Christmas fun and a tradition that I hope we continue with for a long time. It’s calm and relaxing and gives us ideas for our own decorations too.
While most don’t question why we always go on this certain day during the month, some have asked so I thought I would share the reason. In December of 2003, Michael and I had been dating for 3 1/2 years and he started getting antsy. I knew something was up and I figured it out that he was going to ask me to marry him. (He can’t keep secrets from me for anything.) While I knew it was coming, I just didn’t know when or how. He however didn’t think I knew he was up to something.
On Sunday December 21st 2003, Michael and I decided we were going to drive around and look at the lights. We drove around for a really long time (poor guy, he was probably so nervous!) and then he pulled over at the decorated gazebo. I asked him why were stopping and he told me to get out because he wanted to look at the tree in there.
I decided to give him a little bit of a hard time when I realized what was about to happen. I finally got out and we walked up to the gazebo. It was all decorated for Christmas and was so pretty. Michael gave me a hug and pulled out a small box with a ring in it. He told me that he loved me and asked me to marry him. It was simple and sweet and of course I said yes.
From there on out on December 21st, we have driven around looking at Christmas lights. We’ve been together for a total of 14 1/2 years now. It’s hard to believe how fast the time has gone!
Just as a side note: we call these people the Griswolds. Their house is so lit up and the photo doesn’t even do it justice. My friend lives across the street from them and they do it every single year. lol

Awww what a sweet engagement story! Awww! And the fact that you guys look at Christmas lights every year on that day. awww! So romantic and sweet!
I love the “griswolds” house! But really I LOVE LOVE the house is the second picture.
